George, do we have any idea of who his father was?
We have no idea.
I mean, we never will know.
And by the way, birth records were not kept in Indiana until 1882.
So there's no record of Billy's birth in 1860.
Yes.
Again, in 1866, he's living in Indiana.
He's six years old.
And he's living with his mother and his younger brother in the Indianapolis School District that he lives just up the street from.
And
He attends school in Indianapolis first four grades from 1866 until 1870.
We even know the name of his first and second grade teachers.
But I've gotten a lot of argument from people saying, unless you have a class roster that shows his name, you can't say that he attended school in Indianapolis, which of course is kind of silly.
Because the circumstantial evidence is pretty strong.
Billy could read and write.
He was in a public school system district from the age of 6 to 10.
And it's pretty certain, pretty conclusive, that that's what he would have learned to read and write.
