If you buy wine at Costco, you can either buy a wine that comes in its original bottle or you can buy a wine that's relabeled as this Kirkland Signature brand.
And for years, many, many winemakers would rebuff Costco.
They didn't want to sell through a bulk wholesaler both because of like lowbrow perceptions and also because they wanted to protect their prices.
Nobody likes the feeling of flying and realizing the person in the seat next to them on the airplane paid $100 less for their seat, right?
So a lot of wineries for years didn't.
But now that they're really being squeezed by these shifting drinking tastes and this oversupply, a lot of winemakers –
are now actually calling Costco back.
And so Costco now has its pick.
You know, they're hearing from a lot of the top French chateaus who want their wines to be sold under Kirkland's signature.
And then many, many smaller winemakers are now selling their bottles to the local Costco's.
A hundred percent, yes.
Yes, and that's also one way they're able to tell winemakers that they don't believe their cheap prices will disrupt the market or disrupt the pricing too much because what they're hoping is this feeling of you've got to buy it now.
You don't know if you'll be able to find it again in the future.
It means that Costco can't be your go-to to buy a certain wine from a certain winemaker.
You might have to make the trek if you can't find it there again, but you also might just see what you find next time.
So I drove up to the Costco to talk to customers.
I'm frankly not a huge wine drinker myself, but I spoke with customers who were really quite excited.
One woman was saying how, you know, the famous rotisserie chicken there is for some people.
Well, for her, it's the wine section.
