And that is a big problem in itself because it doesn't do anything to stamp out the behaviour.
It's okay to disagree with each other.
It's okay to have strong policy debates and to oppose each other vehemently.
But the moment it edges into personalised, gendered or discriminatory commentary, we all have an obligation to call it out no matter who it's happening to.
And Pauline Hanson's comments are really indicative of that problem because
When I spoke out about Jacinta Allen's treatment, people asked me if I'd say the same thing about Pauline Hanson, and I absolutely would.
I'd say no matter who it was happening to because it's not just about that person, it's contributing to a really big problem.
And with Pauline Hanson's relevancy right now, I believe that she has an obligation to still do this.
And telling a political leader...
particularly as someone who has been in the game for a long time and has been mistreated, just to suck it up.
That is contributing to a really dangerous and harmful public narrative.
I'm hopeful that she, in future, will reconsider commentary like that.
But by the same token, we also should expect
politicians in the Labor Party and in the Liberal Party to condemn this mistreatment as well.
And in my experience, that's certainly not something that is happening across party lines.
There's been multiple experiences of mine where I have been on the receiving end of really violent, sexist and misogynistic abuse.
And when I call it out, there is very little solidarity because they're not in my party.
As long as we have this view that we only care about something when it's happening to our own people, we're not actually doing anything to address it.
In fact, we're probably only making the problem worse.
