And, you know, can you see if there's people trapped or can you see if there's people lying on the side of the road?

So all of the time your mind is racing, taking in all this information to try and build your own picture of what you're going to have to do once you step out of the vehicle.

Yeah, it was pre-airbags.

And, you know...

I suppose people often say to us, you know, the airbag can kill you and things like that.

Look, there's probably little small evidences where an airbag, you know, caused some injuries, but they are saving a lot more people from death and from serious injury than they are injuring.

You know, arriving at a scene and you look at the windscreen of a car and you see what we would call a bullseye.

And that is caused by somebody's head.

Yeah, it's literally, it's a bullseye in the screen, in the windscreen, you know, in the shape of somebody's head, basically.

And that's telling us straight away that there's a potential traumatic head injury here, you know.

Whereas when the airbags deploy, their job is to fill that space, stop you hitting the steering wheel and stop you reaching the windscreen.

You know, or when you get to the car and you see a steering wheel, you know, we all know in behind that nice soft padding of a steering wheel is metal and that's bent and it's bent forward.

And again, for that amount of force to bend a metal steering wheel, somebody's chest has most likely caused that.

Yeah, absolutely.

I mean, look, I think it's a thing now that's just second nature to everybody.

You know, even children now, you know, are making sure they have their seatbelts on.

And I know of children who will remind mammy and daddy to put on their seatbelt.

And I think it's ingrained in society now that, you know, we cannot drive without a seatbelt.

And, you know, the damage that it causes when an impact happens, like if you imagine you're travelling at 100 kilometres an hour,

And you hit a concrete pillar or whatever you hit and that car comes to a complete stop.
