And particularly in a road traffic accident where they're trapped and badly trapped.

And we know it's going to take, you know, an hour or more to get them out because of the badly mangled wreckage.

And despite the best efforts of our colleagues in the fire service, who are absolutely brilliant at taking these cars apart, we just know that based on what we're seeing on our monitors and what we're seeing just looking at the patient, that sadly this person probably isn't going home tonight, you know.

And that's harrowing because you're the person sitting there with them.

You know, you can't do anything for them other than treat what you can see and provide, you know, comfort.

Yeah, I think there is.

Nobody says it, you know, and even the rest of the people working around the car, they know because they know from our face when we look at each other, we have that look that kind of says, you know, we're in trouble here.

Yeah, it's a very difficult thing to manage and it's very sensitive.

But we would never tell somebody at the roadside like that, that the person that they're asking about has died.

You know, it's just not appropriate.

It's not the place for it.

What do you tell them?

We have to try and, I suppose, work around it and say that, look, we're doing everything we can to get them out of the car.

So you're not, you know, giving any false hope, but you're also not, you know, telling them that the person has died.

You know, are we trying to focus themselves back on themselves by saying, look, we're going to concentrate on you now.

My colleagues are with your friend, you know.

That kind of thing.

But it's a very hard one to manage, you know, when they keep asking that question and you have to keep trying, come up with a new way to, you know, not tell them that the person is deceased.

It does, yeah.

I mean, look, it's always sad when somebody dies in any scenario, but when it's children and, you know, when you're a dad yourself, it does, you know, really, really come home to, you know, that, like, this is a family now without a child, you know, growing up and, you know, have gone before their parents.
