And why wasn't he sucked in?
By seventeen twenty the stars had completely aligned for him.
I mean not only was he financially literate, he was politically rehabilitated, he was partly outside the ruling faction, he was a stabilizer, if you like, in a system under great strain.
He'd even been warning, I gather, about some of the risks in the South Sea bubble.
Um, is that true that he'd actually warned against the South Sea bubble at some point?
So he basically suddenly looks by seventeen twenty accidentally brilliant.
And as you we all know, looking accidentally brilliant at the right moment can sometimes be something that turbocharges not just your career, but the changes the course of history around you.
So let's go to seventeen twenty.
Um, the South Sea bubble has popped, the economy's in free fall, everyone's upset and in disaster.
How is the government feeling at that point and why does war poll matter so much?
Which actually had liquidity.
And of course he also managed to avoid an outright sovereign default, didn't he, which was very important.
And in terms of how actually evaluating this, because it was quite remarkable, it sounds like the immediate impact was pretty effective.
So who actually lost out from all this?
Who were the losers?
clearly in many ways a great survivor.

How do you evaluate him today?
You know, was he effectively just a big political operator who slided his way up um the, you know, pole of politics through luck or through brilliant manipulative skills?
