If I write these job requirements for skills, not a degree, because I had started to prove I could hire people that had a skill, community college with a high school I started to work with, they could actually do the job.
And by the way, I came to learn, because we started to work with these high schools and community colleges, that once down that path, many then went on to get a college degree.
They just didn't have access.
And so that set me down this path of a skills-first world.
And it's been probably the most rewarding thing maybe in my life.
I think it's a paradigm.
It's a movement for the country.
I also think it's the biggest threat to democracy because things like offshoring, globalization, they've been good for a lot of things.
I was a big fan of globalization, free trade, but it's not been good for all people.
And so this idea of hollowing out the middle class and AI is going to do this even further up the rung is going to leave a lot of people without great jobs.
So you got to find a way to bring more people into good paying jobs that can then be upwardly mobile.
And so this to me is a way to get them in and then have upwardly mobile jobs from there.
So I think moving the whole country to a skills based world, I mean, there's a lot of history to how we ended up with, you know, after the GI Bill, college or bust, immigrants coming that the college degree is the way forward in America.
And I'm vice chair of the university, so I am not against it.
It's the idea that where you start just may not be where you finish, meaning you may have a different starting point.
And don't believe everyone has to start with a college degree.
They may get there eventually.
And so that's the idea of skills first.
And that's what I work on now.
So it's helping all the companies recredential their jobs because what we found is half,
