And he was concerned the way many green politicians around the world are with the upshots of the kind of dispute settlement mechanisms where corporations in Canada could try and stymie green reforms here.

Now, the conclusion, as I understand it, by the Supreme Court was that it could be ratified by the Oireachtas, but only with some legal safeguards.

So Ireland has not yet ratified CETA, but it's something which is going into force.

Ireland sells more stuff to Canada than Canada sells to us.

And from Canada, it's mostly cereals.

Canada produces a lot of wheat.

Ireland doesn't.

And going the other way, it's pharmaceuticals, as you might expect.

Yeah, I mean, it's got huge oil reserves.

It's really hard, I think, probably for people in this country to fathom how big Canada is.

You know, we flooded an area the size of the UK to power a dam, right?

Newfoundland is probably closer to Ireland than it is to Vancouver.

You know, it's just vast, but there's only about 40 million people living there.

And we're all sort of strung along the American border, which is unfortunate at this time.

Yeah.

But yes, no, there's huge natural gas reserves, huge oil reserves, especially in northern Alberta, where the very costly and messy oil sands could swing into production as oil prices rise.

Potash in Saskatchewan, which is vital for fertilizers.

You know, basically, you want it, we have it.

And Canada's tried to get away from just being a resource-based economy, developing sort of corporate headquarters and its own indigenous industry.
