both of those things kind of helped me do the job that I do now.

Because you're standing slightly outside always, but also you're trying to find ways to fit in, if you know what I mean.

And I think both of those are kind of,

qualities that play into being a chat host.

I mean, I always think that a lot of people think they're going to like being a chat host because, you know, it's called The Graham Norton Show.

I come out at the beginning, everyone claps, it's great, look at me.

But the minute those guests come on,

you're not high status anymore.

The minute the guests come on, you're low status.

And I think a lot of people who try doing a chat show forget that bit.

After the first 10 minutes they're going, this show seems to have stopped being about me.

You don't know what's gone wrong.

And I think you've got to be able to kind of enjoy that of kind of elevating the guests, whoever they are, you know, making it appear that they are funnier, more famous, more interesting than you are.

Well, hippie movement, it was cheap rent.

Let's call it what it was.

I was an economic hippie.

Yeah, they have these visas for Irish students called J1 visas.

And it means you can go to America and work when you're an Irish student.

So I ended up in San Francisco and had no money.

But there was this room in a hippie commune and you could pay by the night.
