How did Graham Norton’s early San Francisco 'hippie commune' experience shape his outlook?
So I ended up in San Francisco, and I had no money, but there was this room in a hippie commune, and you could pay by the night. It was honestly the best thing for me, because I was, I think, 19, 20, and these hippies were just great. They really opened my eyes to a lot of things. I think when you're young, you think there's no time. You think everything's going to happen now. And I remember there was one of the hippies, she was 40, and she was training to be a nurse. Of course, in my head, 19, I was thinking, God, how tragic. Why would you bother learning how to do something when you're 40? I must have said that to her in some way. And she was like, yeah, if I do qualify, I'll be doing this job for 25 years, which is longer than you've been alive.
So it was a good thing to learn at that age that actually you have more time than you think. You've got time to go down cul-de-sacs, you've got time to fail, you've got time to start again, time to come up with a new dream. You know, I loved waking up, age 52, a debut novelist. When I was at drama school back in the 80s, we all saw success as only one thing. You know, it was our name in lights. A few years ago, we had a reunion. I thought it was so interesting how, for all of those people, what success looked like. had changed so much. For some, it was running a business. For others, it was having a family. Success is finding some sort of satisfaction in your life. If you define success too narrowly, then suddenly, failure becomes a very broad channel that you somehow staggered into.

Graham Norton, welcome to Between Two Beers. Thank you very much.
I'm happy to be here.
We're very excited to have you with us. It's actually a really cool sentence for us to say. We started this podcast seven years ago in my garage, and every year we put out a list of our dream guests. And every year, Seamus says... Graham Norton, and here we are. And then this year, Tim Lightbourne... who is a co-founder of invivo wines from new zealand and a fan of the show it must be said said hey i think i can get you graham and so here we are so i wanted to start by asking you about your connection to invivo because you've been a minor shareholder since 2014 and there's been something like 18 million bottles sold so can you tell us about the the approach and the partnership and and why it works
yeah listen all what happened was i mean i uh was doing some press in new zealand for the chat show and uh you know you know they asked me things like you know who's your favorite um kiwi guest and i'm like i have no idea so and to kill the time i thought i'll tell them i love new zealand so many block which i do i do love new zealand new zealand And anyway, Tim and Rob saw this interview in a paper or in a magazine or something. And, you know, they were a very, very small winemaking operation at that point. But they had the kind of gumption to contact my office and say, we saw Graham, would you like some for the green room?
