So I ended up in San Francisco, and I had no money, but there was this room in a hippie commune, and you could pay by the night.
It was honestly the best thing for me, because I was, I think, 19, 20, and these hippies were just great.
They really opened
my eyes to a lot of things.
I think when you're young, you think there's no time.
You think everything's going to happen now.
And I remember there was one of the hippies, she was 40, and she was training to be a nurse.
Of course, in my head, 19, I was thinking, God, how tragic.
Why would you bother learning how to do something when you're 40?
I must have said that to her in some way.
And she was like, yeah, if I do qualify, I'll be doing this job for 25 years, which is longer than you've been alive.
So it was a good thing to learn at that age that actually you have more time than you think.
You've got time to go down cul-de-sacs, you've got time to fail, you've got time to start again, time to come up with a new dream.
You know, I loved waking up, age 52, a debut novelist.
When I was at drama school back in the 80s, we all saw success as only one thing.
You know, it was our name in lights.
A few years ago, we had a reunion.
I thought it was so interesting how, for all of those people, what success looked like.
had changed so much.
For some, it was running a business.
