Yeah, I had my briefcase on the carrier on the back.
That's right, had no choice.
Well you want to look successful, don't you?
I mean people want to deal with successful people, so you don't want to look like you're unsuccessful.
Well, kinda had to because thirty grand, I mean, still a reasonable amount of money, but in those days that would have bought you a average house in Hamilton.
So I was sort of short of a house.
I was negative one house.
And I just thought, Well, there's no way I'm ever gonna get out of it and technically I was bankrupt.
I mean I never went bankrupt 'cause I I didn't want to.
I didn't want that stain, but um
I thought I have to work it off somehow and I just I can't do that.
Like in those days in New Zealand, a r good salary would have been
ten or twelve grand a year or something and you owe thirty and you know it's twelve grand before tax, right?
So you just and you gotta live.
So you you spend your whole life paying it off.
So my parents had moved to P and G and uh they liked it there and did well.
So my father ended up running an engineering company or road building engineering company and um they'd gone up there and building roads in P and G and we went to visit them and um I met the guy who ran Remington
just he was in their social circle and got talking to him and he said, Oh, you should come up here and work for us and the money's much better and the taxes very little.
And um at those days the currency there's called the keener and the keener was about the same value as a US dollar.
So every one of those you earned was worth a couple of New Zealand dollars.
