I knew exactly the photographer to shoot the story.
I had a rough idea of what it would even look like.
Well, I took all sorts of phone calls.
I took complaints.
I took suggestions from people I didn't know.
And a man called me one day and said that he was a lawyer in San Francisco, that he represented the man who was Deep Throat.
And Deep Throat in America was the secret source that Bob Woodward had used when he and Carl Bernstein were reporting on the Watergate scandals and that they used for their book, All the President's Men.
It was one of the great mysteries of American popular culture.
It was a big thing.
So this man called me and he said he represented Deep Throat.
And we talked for a while.
He said there were some issues.
He said the man was in his 90s, that he had suffered a number of strokes, and that he was slipping into Alzheimer's.
But I said, let me have somebody get back to you.
So I had one of my editors, David Friend, call him back.
And over the next two or three months, they...
went back and forth.
And finally, David Frank came to me.
He said, we've got a name.
I said, what is it?
