Carl was on our masthead.
If I called Carl, he'd immediately call Bob, and Bob would get into the Washington Post the next day.
Because remember, we're a monthly magazine.
If I called Bob, the same thing would have happened.
So we had to go to press with this story without knowing that 100% that Mark Felt was Deep Throat.
Anyway, I get married, and I'm on my honeymoon, and my wife and I are coming back to New York.
We're in the airport in the Bahamas, and I didn't have a cell phone in those days.
I was one of the last people to get one, but she had a flip phone, and she gets a call, and she's a David friend.
So I pick up the phone, and the editor was working on the Deep Throat story.
So I pick up the phone.
I said, David, hey.
And he said, I just want to remind you that we released the Deep Throat story wide to all the newspapers, the wire services, and the television networks.
