And then, sorry, another aspect of it was specifically these questions that they were asked were like trick questions, right?
cognitive test questions that rely you to kind of calmly think and then you go oh this is the answer right like it's intentionally almost not misleading but you have to catch you have to be like alert and actually focus to like get the right answer when I was doing the questions from the study I was like no they're not like trick trying to trick you they're just questions that require a little bit of a slowdown okay
And then the parameters are interesting.
Like some people got 30 minutes of scrolling TikTok before doing it.
And other people got 30 minutes of reading.
And then some people got 30 minutes of cute animals versus 30 minutes of educational videos.
Then some people got 30 minutes of swipe as you want.
Some people only got to swipe 10 times.
And some people had to watch the videos fully.
Like they just weren't allowed to swipe and it would play.
And what is key to understand is that all of the drop in the...
questions and the drop in the ability for you to use your cognition was all related to the physicality of swiping like your autonomy to like yes skip yes yeah if you're able to swipe in these studies it found that that is when there was a decrease in cognition when you were forced to watch like the two minute like pan you just focus on it yeah and i was like there's something really crazy about that and it makes you realize you are doing such an odd thing when you're swiping
When you are swiping on your phone, you are decreasing your cognition and it is about the swiping choice, which I find so interesting.
Like the studies show that if you are exactly just left to watch videos or if you click a YouTube video and sit there and watch it, it is not depleting your cognition in the same way that swiping does because of the decision fatigue.
they actually aren't entirely sure the reason why they just know that the actual act of sitting there and swiping on short form videos on tiktok youtube shorts i guess is one of them and instagram reels are the reason why your cognition is faltering and you are feeling more sad i just think that's a key information that the science is showing it's this act of swiping and when you
read about the metrics of these businesses like meta and all these things they talk a lot about short form content because they're now aware it's addictive to people it's what people want it's the thing that's exhausting you the most cognitively from a scientific perspective and to sit down and think oh i'm gonna scroll and swipe i think it's important to know that is the problem for your brain there are other ways to consume the internet that will not have the same impact
including going on websites, reading articles, watching a YouTube video.
I really feel like this swipe culture entered our world very recently.
I'll be like 515.
I'm done this swiping and it'll be 505.
