You have Trump himself, who has sounded furious with Netanyahu on numerous occasions in recent weeks.
So not only is the war, I think, in Iran a strategic fiasco for Israel, but
It's also jeopardized its relationship with its closest ally.
I think it'll get a little easier in the short term if we assume that Hormuz will indeed reopen in the coming weeks, that Iran will declare it safe and will remove the mines that they have placed in the Strait.
What will happen then is you have about 60 oil tankers right now laden with crude sitting in the Gulf.
They've been stranded there for months.
They will head for the exits and bring that oil to world markets.
And then you also have a huge inventory of oil that has built up in onshore storage in the Gulf countries, which haven't been able to export much of their oil since the war began.
So that's going to move out as well.
So there will be a bit of relief in commodities markets.
But I think the question is, how long will this deal last?
Going back to this idea of, you know, is this a permanent end to the war or are we just kicking the can down the road?
by 60 days.
And I think if there's a concern about the deal not holding, you might have, for example, shipping companies that are reluctant to send new tankers into the Gulf because they would be worried about the possibility of war resuming and their ships then
getting stuck.
Now, some might not have that worry, some might be more willing to take the chance, but I think it's going to come down to these individual decisions by a lot of commercial actors, and some of them might take a wait-and-see approach.
So I think it's going to be some time before traffic through the Strait gets back to pre-war levels, and therefore oil prices, even if they're down from their peak, they're not going back immediately to what they were before the war.
Trump was elected on a handful of big promises, and two of those promises were lower prices, less inflation, a better economy, and no more wars in the Middle East.
And so what he has done over the past few months
is break two of the fundamental promises that he made to voters.
