And Teddy Roosevelt imagined that he could become a president as consequential as George Washington.

Franklin Roosevelt.

Franklin Roosevelt knew full well when he ran for president in 1940 that he was breaking the unwritten rule that Washington had established.

And he did not do it as a way of showing disrespect for Washington.

Instead, he saw it as a way of safeguarding the United States during this crisis that was coming with the Second World War.
