And so higher bond yields make stocks look less attractive, but especially stocks that don't offer significant payouts now.
The rising US dollar is just another challenge for tech companies.
When the dollar rises, that makes other companies less valuable, which can cut into revenue from abroad.
And a lot of the big tech companies generate a significant portion of their revenue abroad.
The tech and communication services sectors actually have more international revenue exposure than the rest of the companies in the S&P 500.
And a number of the big tech companies' executives called out the strong dollar as a challenge on their most recent earnings calls, including Microsoft and Meta.
Yeah, for example, Apple is actually outperforming the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 this year.
Investors responded quite positively to the company's most recent earnings results.
Apple reported record revenue in its latest quarter, so it appears to be weathering the storm a bit better than some of the other big tech companies.
Yeah, as I mentioned, a lot of investors are turning to treasuries that have higher yields now as a more risk-free way to invest in the market.
And investors are also looking at stocks with hefty dividends.
These are regular payouts of a company's profits to their shareholders.
And certain industries, companies tend to offer higher dividends, for example, utility stocks and energy stocks.
So those sectors have performed pretty well this year in the market as investors look for higher yielding stocks.
Right now, Wall Street appears to expect more damage ahead.
For example, analysts' estimates for fourth quarter earnings from firms in the S&P 500's communications services sector, which is home to the parent companies of Facebook and Google, have fallen more than any group since the end of June.
So analysts are still marking down their earnings expectations for these companies and still see some further downside ahead.
Absolutely, anytime.
The S&P 500 has moved higher in the one-year period following every midterm election since 1942.
So that's a spotless eight-decade record of rising after the midterms.
