And that's not the way people look at Africa, because they make a judgment of the worst of it.
And we should be very humble in the European Union this year and next year because we are projected to have an economic growth of 0.3%.
Whereas the entire sub-Saharan Africa is projected to have 5% economic growth.
And mind you, that is not from oil.
That is from a diverse economic development now.
And there are 17 countries in Africa which are above 5% economic growth.
And I'm, as a public health professor, I'm not so impressed by economic growth.
But when I see that the economy grows and the child mortality drops at the same time, then something is truly happening.
That's not happening in Gabon, for instance, but that's happening in Tanzania.
The young couples in Iran, in Vietnam, in Brazil are grabbing the condom or the pill in the midst of the night when they make love.
The big new change that really has become obvious this year is sub-Saharan Africa.
There are more and more countries that are reducing child mortality and are having stable economic growth.
I'm looking at Ethiopia, for instance.
And then people would miss that because they have concerns with human rights.
And I don't argue with that.
But steadily, child mortality is falling in Ethiopia.
And it's falling at a rate that is faster than it ever did in Sweden and Britain.
And also economic growth is very fast in Ethiopia today.
And it's not just one or two years, it's now six or seven years.
And Kenya turned around this year when we got the last survey on child mortality.
