Here's the thing.

I mean, I was 39 years old, and the day that I first hit the New York Times bestseller list was July 11, 2001.

And the reason I know the exact date was that my fourth child was born on that day.

So it was a big day.

So I had a newborn two-year-old, four-year-old, and seven-year-old, which I thank goodness for because success does mess with your head, even on a small time basis.

And my book was not, it wasn't Da Vinci Code, it wasn't The Firm, it wasn't like that.

It did very, very well, but it wasn't like that kind of a breakout.

But it still messes with your head.

And so I get like, I don't even know how someone like Justin Bieber can survive the sort of fame that these young rock stars get or whatever else.

It is, I think, even for anybody, it's a bit of a mind screw.

Luckily, I had a really stable family life.

How did it change your behavior?

What were you doing?

Oh, I don't think I changed my behavior that much.

But I just, it was like a strange kind of a freedom.

It just messes with your head when you're one thing and then you're another.

I think fame does that.

And luckily, writers don't have that kind of fame.

I have a number of, you know, I just did a book tour with Reese Witherspoon.

Because Reese and I wrote a novel together.
