They're trying to spend more cap money now, but have a clean cap sheet later.
That's a different approach.
But to me, when the cap is going up so much, having that extra year tacked on at a lower cap isn't going to necessarily hurt you.
If you're in your contention window, and I think by the moves that they're making, you don't find that Sergey Bobrovsky, if you're not trying to be a good team, and considering they don't have their next two first-round draft picks, I think they are going for it.
It is kind of some mixed messages with what you'd expect in the strategy.
I thought an original thought, because I've seen it online, but the first thing that came to my mind was this looks a lot like Patrick Marleau, where the first year or two is fine, and then that third year is an albatross hanging around on the neck.
And remember with Marleau, they had to trade a first-round pick to get rid of him to Carolina, and that first-round pick turned out to be Seth Jarvis.
Oh, yeah, so I think that Bobrovsky had a really bad regular season, and he didn't get the chance to show what he could do in the playoffs because they didn't make the playoffs, and I think it's not a large part of that injury, but his play was a contributing factor.
I'm sure we'll talk about Freddie Anderson with Edmonton.
His regular season really wasn't very good either, except he was on a team that went to the playoffs, and then he got to show what he could do in a playoff run or a cup run.
I think with Wabrowski, that's what they're hoping for, that even if the regular season isn't great, with Stolarz there, that'll get them through to the playoffs, and then the playoff Wabrowski will emerge.
And when you put that in the context of how I mentioned they're comparable with Anderson,
With Edmonton, it's a very low bet.
It's a million-dollar cap hit.
And they have two other goalies.
And they don't need Anderson, really, to make the playoffs, right?
And hopefully, if he gets hot, it's great.
And if not, if it doesn't work with Anderson, he's an older goalie, then you move on next year.
