I know you're a planner.
How comprehensively did you plan this book and how much did it veer away from your plan?
That's really helpful.
I was thinking of something else in relation to Miranda, actually, which was I was wondering whether you ever need any help in writing a female protagonist, whether there are ever moments where Miranda says, well, a woman would never think of it that way, or whether this is just human empathy and you should be able to write across genders with no help.
That's interesting.
Okay.
So you do have two protagonists.
It's written from the perspective of these, in the voices of these two women.
And at first they seem very different.
One of them is a bit older.
How old is she exactly?
So she's a middle-aged woman.
Yeah.
And that's Kate.
And then you have Phoebe, who is younger.
She's about 30.
Yeah.
And Kate is sort of nicer on the surface of things and in some ways sort of more civilized, I think, follows the rules of...
how people behave and what's nice and respectable um to an extent and then Phoebe is the kind of person who's really proud of being very acerbic quite mean for sort of comic effect I suppose spiky and yeah did that did that sort of did they emerge in that opposition quite quickly when you were thinking about the book or you know how do you feel about them both?
And is a bit more complicated than that.
