For a child, needs are really boring.
Yeah.
And wants are exciting.
And so that's what they want.
And they also don't have that premise of actually paying for that roof over their head.
That's already been taken care of for them.
So, which sort of makes sense, doesn't it?
If you think any money they're getting is definitely going to be steered towards their wants.
In my opinion, and not everyone's going to agree with this, I mean, look, I was lucky enough when my children were born that a $1,000 Kickstart was still there.
And so we threw the kids in straight away simply for that.
I thought it would probably disappear, and it did.
Now, whether you then invest for your children outside of KiwiSaver, if you've got the capacity to do it, time value, I mean, it's fantastic.
The amount of additional money that they'll end up with from you investing on their behalf is huge.
Absolutely.
And I think parenting, I think sometimes you're a bit broader, right?
So you think, well, actually, what happens if my child is 18, wanting to go to university overseas, or maybe not, maybe it's starting a business, something like that.
That flexibility's gone if it's just KiwiSaver.
Like I say to a lot of people, though, if you're not particularly good with money, like you spend it, KiwiSaver might be the best option.
And that's why I think we see a lot of people, even with bank accounts, they're actually set up in the parents' names.
It's almost like setting up a trust as the child beneficiary, but the parents still have ultimate control.
