American democracy had to adjust to the westward movement of the country in the 19th century. matched

We had to deal with that. matched
We had to deal with globalization that brought us to the Great Crash and the Great Depression. matched
And that was not an easy thing to come out of and to figure out. matched
And then after the war, we had to deal with the idea of a world that now had nuclear weapons. matched
Now we've got to deal with climate change and with the rise of AI and the internet. matched
I mean, that's a huge, huge change in human history. matched
Are we going to be able to do it? matched
Well, we've always done it in the past, so it looks pretty good from where I sit. matched
We could just as easily fail. matched
You know, democracies are on the ropes right now, and that's what we're working so hard to push back on. matched
But I will tell you... matched
I got to get up in the morning tomorrow and do something. matched
And if my options are to throw my hands up and say, well, yeah, I'm going to let Elon Musk run everybody's lives for eternity, or I'm going to work to defend those laws of nature and nature's God that humans have the right and the self-evident principles behind that, I'm going to get up and be on that side rather than on the former. matched
Because if you believe, as I do, that the way you change... matched
American democracy or American politics is by adhering really closely to those Enlightenment ideals of reasoned argument and a nonpartisan attention to what those details are, the minute that I become a candidate for office, I lose all that. matched
