I must have barreled my way past whatever it was that was behind me.
But in the end.
It mattered little.
How it mattered little.
After I pulled myself up at the base of the attic stairs, I ran, almost on all fours, down to the first floor and threw myself against the front door.
In my panic, I pulled at the door to widen it, but the oak shift robe was in the way.
It was in the way, and it wasn't bunching.
Straining and cursing and crying at the damned piece of furniture, I then tried to force my way back through the slit between the door and threshold, like I had done earlier.
But it was tight.
Earlier I was able to suck in my stomach, and that helped me a little to wiggle through.
But now?
My heavy breathing and clumsy motions simply made something that was already hard to do now impossible.
I stepped back, throwing off my thick parka before I'd made the mistake of looking over my shoulder towards the stairs.
All I could do was smother a scream with my sweaty hands.
Slumping to the ground I watched in horror as it a ghoul.
Looked down at me from the top of the stairs.

A skeleton's grin had been cleanly carved into his emaciated face.
In spite of the slight hunch that had drawn his shoulders forward and curved his spine.
He was a tall creature.
