My fight or flight response pumped gallons of panic into my heart, and the muscles in my chest still refused to take an inhale.

My phone fell with a thud out of my shaking hands.
Eyes clenched shut.
I felt my burning palms press against my ears.
A hissing voice demanded again.
For a split second I wasn't sure if the voice was coming from out of the depths of my own waves of fear.
Was it my inner self that was speaking to me and demanding that I open my eyes and
Face whatever it was that was behind me?
But the voice rasped again.
And then I knew that the words were real.
The icy breath, like the tip of a corpse's finger, drew a line down the back of my neck.
I couldn't look.
Not in a million years.
Not in that moment, said
My body decided it wasn't going to wait for my brain to make up its mind.
One second the icy breath was brushing against the back of my neck.
And the next second I was falling down the spiral stairs.
I can't recall anything that happened in between those two points of time.
