And I've seen a couple of versions of performance when Hippolyta is in chains throughout the entire performance.

She has to marry Theseus, and it seems that she wants to.

She's not putting up any fight at all, but it is a forced marriage.

And so the opening scene of the play is Hippolyta being forced to marry Theseus, and then Hermia being forced not to marry Lysander.

And so free will is taken from these characters, but what is it that motivates them?

It's desire.

Yeah.

Right.

They want certain things and they want marriage.

They want union.

I mean, everybody knows that the happy ending of every Shakespeare comedy and every true literary comedy is marriage.

Right.

Which is in modernity is we keep trying to strip that away, but you can't tell a good comedy without marriage because marriage is symbolic.

Well, it's actual and the symbolic experience of union and harmony.

That's what we want.

We want harmonious, loving union after brokenness and chaos.

So anyway, I think that this play is all about duty and desire.

But what's unclear to me in the play throughout the whole time is what the locus of duty is.

What is it that these characters are supposed to do?

We see that in every scene.
