And I think that's really what makes the play really fascinating.

Yeah, he's benevolent, but he's complicated.

Yeah, I think that's a good interpretation of him.

He seems to be sympathetic to the lovers, even though he banishes them.

And so I think he is an interesting character because he's noble, but at the same time troubling because of the nature of his own marriage.

And that's intentional on Shakespeare's part.

He could have had Theseus marry anybody.

But he has him marry essentially an enslaved captive person.

I think that's really interesting, and it brings up some interesting thoughts about this play for me, because I...

I always find the classical elements of this play to be a bit disorienting.

It reads like a medieval play.

It doesn't feel classical.

This is a great peak Shakespeare comedy.

Yeah.

Probably his first great comedy, his first masterpiece.
