And so, of course, it's intentional that he embeds what feels like a medieval story with these medieval superstitions.

And embeds that in, maybe not conflates, because conflates is always negative, but he overlays it with this classical story.

tradition creating what it feels and to me disorienting and i think that's kind of the point like shakespeare wants us to not quite orient ourselves within this play um he wants it to feel from the very beginning almost you know um

like difficult to kind of find our feet in.

And along with all of these themes of coercion and how he juxtaposes that with this comedy and these magical elements, the dissonance between the real world and the green world of the forest and the Midsummer idea, it's all very, it has this kind of immersion into the fantastic from the very beginning.

Yeah, and I think he is highlighting, again, these themes of coercion and the robbing of free will.

Every character, every character, including Oberon and Titania, the king and queen of the fairies, has to wrestle with...

And reckon with coercion and their free will being taken from them somewhere throughout the play.

And it is in a Shakespearean green world, right?

Which is like this magical world that is contrasted with kind of the prosaic real world.

And in Midsommar, there's such a stark contrast between them.

There's other plays in which the contrast is a little bit more mild, right?

Like I'm thinking of The Merchant of Venice, that Portia's home is like a green world.

It has its kind of own rules, that it's ruled by a woman instead of a man.

And you kind of have to look for it, but not in Midsommar, right?

It's just so...

starkly contrasted.

And the real world is governed by these implacable laws, as you brought up, Junius.
