But like no tom y it needs to be today because tomorrow could be worse.
Tomorrow could be harder.
It is.
That's OK.
Well, I think stepping back from today's individual measure, what really stands out is just the constant tinkering with business rates.
It used to be a tax that was very stable.
You had one tax rate.
It didn't change for decades.
And then in recent years, we've had just constant change.
Now, there's lots of different rates.
And it's not just the 20% that we've seen today, as we just heard.
It's the 15% that's on top of.
But the 15% is temporary.
The 20% is permanent.
There's also a different 5%.
percentage point cut for a different subset of businesses and there are two different small business reliefs and there are other temporary reliefs like if everyone's eyes glazing over it's madness to be trying to design a system with this many complexities in it so whatever you're trying to do with business rates and even if you do want to make the case that pubs are special in some way and you want to subsidize them to get more of them this constant tinkering complexity is just not the way to go about it
In a way, and the businesses who are getting help today, I'm sure, will be pleased.
But part of the problem is they're not going to really know what to expect from their business rates in future.
If you're planning to run a pub for the next five, ten years rather than just the next six months, you want to know what your tax is going to be.
And I don't think you have a very good idea of what it's going to be because there's always another relief coming around the corner that may be temporary, that may be extended, that may be permanent.
