it's going to be really hard to reverse it.

Who wants to be the prime minister that puts 5p back on energy bills?

Not going to happen.

So if it were a temporary measure, it's actually quite small.

Government's always changed priorities within years.

This one's doing it in a particularly dramatic, you know, 6am drop kind of way.

But I don't think that's particularly exciting.

The bigger issue really is getting to the budget and those bigger public finance pressures.

I mean, if the government is going to make that VAT cut permanent, that's close to £2 billion it's got to find every year.

on top of a laundry list of other pressures in the public finances.

So, look, so far, they're relatively small measures.

If it's just six months, governments can always find £850 million somewhere and pay that.

But it's probably not for six months.

It's going to be every year going forward.

So that's a permanent pressure.

And again, there are just lists and lists and lists of permanent pressures, including lots of little ones that all add up and some really chunky ones like maybe we'll come on to, like defence.

So it will really be the budget when the government has to reckon with how across the rest of the parliament are they going to allocate what's already a really tight budget and how are they going to, are they going to raise more taxes?
