There's obviously a reason that we have vape shops.

People like going to them.

Some people say there's other reasons.

Maybe.

But the broader point is that if people like pubs, they'll go to them.

If the government thinks there aren't enough pubs or pubs need some help, there needs to be some reason why the market left to its own isn't coming up with enough pubs.

Now, I think you can make a case that something like there's an externality.

There's like, you want people to get together and socialising and... Just explain what an externality is again.

It means... Yeah, sorry, getting into jargon.

So it just means something that...

I do something, I produce an effect, I don't take it into account.

So if the pub has one person, it's not very good.

If we all go to the pub, it makes it a nicer environment.

So you want to encourage more people to go to make it a nice, vibrant environment.

So the government maybe subsidises pubs.

But then to the earlier point about who's in and who's out, is it just pubs?

What about restaurants or other venues?

What's special about a pub per se?

And again, even if you do want to make pubs some kind of charitable, you want to subsidise them and encourage more of them, I think it's a question about how you go about doing it.

Well, I think the thing to do is step back and say, actually, on the whole, they're all pretty small.
