China claims nearly all of the South China Sea's land and water, setting up conflicts with its Southeast Asian neighbors, the United States and the broader international community.

Ten years ago, an international arbitral tribunal found the vast majority of Chinese claims in the South China Sea to be unlawful.

China boycotted that process and denies the ruling's legitimacy, but the court's decision has been accepted by a long list of maritime nations.

So this 10-year anniversary gives us a good opportunity to check on China's evolving strategy in the South China Sea.

And for that, I am very pleased to be joined today by Greg Pauling.

Director of the Southeast Asia Program and the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative here at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Greg literally wrote the book on geopolitical contestation and international law in the South China Sea, which is called On Dangerous Ground, America's Century in the South China Sea.

So Greg, thank you so much for coming on the show.

So to start off, hoping you can share a bit about your background and how you came to be the guy who writes books about very important but very small rocks in the middle of the ocean.

Happenstance is very important in this town.

Talent developed at least over time, I would argue.

Is the folks that put out all of the satellite imagery on what China and other claimants are doing in the South China Sea.

So to just dive into it, why does the South China Sea matter to China and why does it also matter for everyone else?

And then in terms of why this matters for everyone else, because of course China says that it doesn't, that this is at most a bilateral issue between China's bordering nations.

But I think sitting in Washington, a lot of folks here have a different perspective.
