You've passed her age.

That's a huge transition.

I hear that women never stop missing their mom and what she could have provided, even women who are old enough now that their mothers are no longer likely to have been alive.

I work with women in their 20s and 30s, all the way up to women in their 70s and 80s, and that's the same, no matter how old they are now.

I also hear a lot of women who say, I never grieved my mother or I didn't grieve her properly.

Very common sentiment.

And I always ask, my first question is, what did you expect your grief to look like?

Because so many of us are expecting the Hollywood version.

Yes, the tears, the crying, the I can't get out of bed in the morning because I feel so sad and depressed version, which is a way to visually represent grief.

But it's not how everybody grieves.

And it's often not how children or teenagers grieve.

Not at all.

In fact, there are so many different ways that grief can show up for a child or an adolescence.

It can look like acting out in school, changing your friend group, getting a tattoo, listening to loud music.

And so I say then, walk me through.

The first couple of weeks or months or even years after your mother died, tell me what happened, what was going on in your life, were there any changes?

And we'll almost always uncover some of the things like the ones I just listed.

And then I will ask, what makes you think that's not a grief response?

And women often feel so much relief when they think, oh, I did grieve my mother.

It just didn't look the way the world expected it to look because they often carry this sadness or this shame that if I didn't grieve my mom, did it mean I didn't love her properly?
