I used to kind of take it for granted that I would remember the important things with vivid clarity.

And that's sort of why I named the album In the Last Hour of Light, because I was trying to find a phrase that captured this sense of like...

This is a beautiful moment, and you know that it's not going to be here forever.

And all of these great things, all of these hours have already passed.

It is, yeah.

It's a song about my wife's father, my father-in-law, who I never met.

He passed away two weeks before I met my wife.

And despite the fact that I never met him, he has a huge presence in my life just because of how big of a presence he was for her.

Right, right.

And I had been wanting to write about him.

One of the things Lindsay's family gave me is his old guitar.

He played music, and Lindsay and her brother –

are so sweet to me, but neither of them played guitar or mandolin.
