But for me, growing up, England had this enormous inferiority complex, perhaps, on the world footballing stage.
We were terrified of Germany.
We were terrified of Spain, France, Argentina, whoever it may be, Italy as well, always a kind of problem team.
And there have been these kind of golden generations of England footballers who've singularly failed, or between them and the manager and whatever it may be, to live up to the hype.
And I think that this team has done, albeit if we get into discussing this game again in further depth, maybe did not live up to it today.
Well, it felt like, you know, as Rory says, they have... Scaloni's a very good manager.
He had identified what England's strengths were, knows very well what Argentina's strengths were, and worked to negate England's strengths and...
pushed Argentina's strengths to the fore and yeah I mean that initial period certainly I think you know it's such a I think England as a footballing entity for years again that mentality has been an issue for them and sometimes that's there's too much passion spent spelt P-A-S-H-U-N where and we talked about actually you know performative Englanding from Bellingham earlier in the tournament
You know, this idea that so often, you know, England would have loved over the years players like David Batty who sort of crunched everyone.
He went near in the 1998 World Cup, then missed a penalty.
That was like the epitome of an English player.
Missed a penalty to get knocked out of the World Cup, but spend the rest of your time there absolutely crunching nice, technically gifted European players.
And so I think...
There's an understandable move on Argentina's part.
Can they rattle England?
Bellingham, has he got a bit of a temper?
Does he have a temperament issue?
I don't think he does, but I think that when you see the way he plays, certainly in the press and things, there's often, I'm sure everyone's seen that extraordinary quote from the Daily Mail where they suggested leaving Jude Bellingham at home before the tournament because of his mentality issues.
but I think you can see yes and you can see that yeah Argentina quite rightly were like you know we talked about the dark arts and that they see that as a legitimately important part of playing football and it was on full display in those first 20 odd minutes but what I thought was really key was that initially I kind of thought they looked too worked up we talked a lot about kind of
I don't think the referee had a massive impact on this game because ultimately this period of play, exciting as it was and as much as it set up the rest of the game, ultimately it was neither won nor lost in this period.
