And we'd sort of bonded, as it were, when we left university.

We went and picked grapes in a French vineyard for a few months.

And so she thought, look, let's just find a place in France and go and live in France because we know we like it there.

And we did.

We just upped sticks and off we went to this ramshackle farmhouse miles from anywhere.

And, of course, I lost touch with music a little bit because we were in the middle of nowhere.

But there was a supermarket nearby.

30 miles away, 50 kilometers away.

We went for a weekly shop.

And they had a CD section.

And they had a lot of The Cure.

And I'd listened to The Cure a bit, but mostly on cassette tapes.

And so I started buying all the albums up.

And it was fantastic.

And just very quickly to tell you a story, I wrote one Rebus novel called The Hanging Garden.

And that's a song by The Cure.

And I wanted permission to quote from the lyrics.

I had no idea how to go about that.

So I wrote to The Cure fan club.

And eventually I got a phone call from the manager of The Cure.
