I still think he could have been...

He serves the team.

Other places, the team would have served him, but he served the team.

So I think he could have been that more sort of

magnetic player he never never quite was but he is is England's top scorer or is Kane Kane's gone faster but he's a mighty nice top scorer so yeah he's done something right with his career a lot of medals yeah he's done okay he's not done bad at all so he doesn't fair play if Ingram has his career yeah he's done excellently so and the talk was of Saka who has kind of gone a little bit backwards he's not the player he was two three years ago because he's been played too much so you've got that balance because you don't want to burn the lad out but again

I'd rather see the lad play a lot for us and then move on at 25, 26 and see him go to Bayern at 18 and play a lot for them until he's 30 because he's in a slower league.

Yeah.

Doesn't he then have the whole game?

Well, that'd be the absolute ideal, but we are talking like 12 years down the line in the business of football.

And...

The buy-in question lingers.

At that point, Sterling wasn't a player anybody else was looking at, to my knowledge from us.

At the moment, we do now have to deal with the fact that his side of the table is going to have demands that they will want for next season.

And they'll probably want earlier.

So I don't think we're in a position where you can say that we keep him out of the public eye for three months and then he forces his way in.

But you can't say that, but there could be ramifications.

We want Liverpool to succeed, not Rio.

But we want him to be part of it.

And part of what Liverpool succeed, not Rio, is that I think the ideal is he forces his way in almost immediately and he makes himself an absolute non-negotiable, has to be playing because he's having such an impact on the pitch in a Michael Owen-esque way.

And obviously he's a completely different player to Owen.
