When I was young, I really hyper fixated on the idea of my best friends one day becoming my sister wives, which was a misguided dream.
Definitely, as I've gotten older and gotten married myself, cult of marriage, my opinion on sister wives has, let's say, evolved.
But please, when I was in middle school and the show was airing, I was looking around like, yeah, why don't we all pick one and just hunker down together?
Maybe they're onto something.
I was a cult leader onto myself because I was thinking if we find the right dumb man, we can manipulate him.
Into taking us all on.
Uh-huh, uh-huh.
Okay, speaking of which, let's get into a little bit about the history of this cult.
When most people hear sister wives, they think of the TLC show Sister Wives, which does follow one polygamist family, the Browns, navigating marriage, parenting, and relationships in a very public way.
And the show has done a lot to normalize the idea of plural marriage, hence my misguided desire to have one, presenting it as a lifestyle choice rooted in faith and family.
But the reality is plural marriage in the US is most commonly associated with the fundamentalist offshoots of Mormonism, particularly groups that broke away from the mainstream, the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, after it officially renounced polygamy in 1890.
These fundamentalist groups continue to practice what they call celestial marriage, the belief that having multiple wives is a requirement for reaching the highest level of heaven.
But importantly, this is a belief system more than just a lifestyle, often deeply embedded in isolated communities with strict gender roles, religious authority structures, and limited contact with the outside world.
I mean, could these celestial marriages actually be a tool for the patriarchy?
My brain just exploded.
God, I learn something new on this podcast every day.
Well, I mean, I think that like sister wives are inherently culty in that people that grow up in these communities are essentially isolated from the moment that they enter their marriages and are often put in positions in which they're insulated communities themselves.
mirror their own and they think that everything that they are oftentimes being sometimes suggested towards, oftentimes subjugated to, is their idea, especially because they're so young.
Obviously, this is not a rule for all women in these situations, but I have to think that
