Any young girl who is entering a marriage or a relationship when she's coming of age around the age of 18 is oftentimes not making decisions that are empowering.

And in this specific situation, when the power dynamic is so ultimately not in her favor, I can't imagine a way in which someone could be operating with their full agency when they decide to enter a relationship like this.

And obviously this is a lot more extreme than the cult of the Amish, in my opinion, but it does remind me of the episode you guys did on the cult of the Amish before my time that I've been famously listening to all of Sounds Like a Cult's back catalog.

So I recently listened to the cult of the Amish and I was thinking about the exit costs associated with giving up all of the time and energy and relationships that you've

put into fostering in order to start fresh.

Like I can imagine that abandoning your marriage years into it after you have children, after you've been in a family unit for so long and starting anew can be so incredibly terrifying and intimidating and also feel like a betrayal of your own core beliefs similarly too.

And that's probably where the similarities end.

So much of what we see on shows like Sister Wives reflects reality.

But

how much of it is a curated version of a much more complex and at times troubling system?

I like that you compared it to a toxic relationship because toxic relationships famously cult of one.

But for someone who didn't grow up in it, what are, would you say, the biggest misconceptions then about the plural marriage communities?
