And I think that resonated as a kind of trial by public kind of idea, because I think that's very pronounced today with things like social media, where trial by public for one small thing, people can have opinions about you anonymously thousands and thousands of miles away.
And that's probably where the pathos for those sisters can be a bit unsettling on the reader's part as well.
I loved the kind of escapism with the moon as a theme where they're constantly mentioning the moon.
And to me, as somebody who quite enjoys just sort of lying in the mountains of Egypt, staring at the moon, I understood that kind of escapism.
So it has some funny moments and some really nice recurring themes as well.
I picked a book by Naguib Mahfouz, who's an Egyptian writer, and it's called Akhenaten, Dweller in Truth.
Mahfouz is the only Arabic writer to win the Nobel Prize.
But this is unusual because it's his only later work.
as in 1980s, that's set in ancient Egypt.
So it's about Akhenaten, who is controversially the first monotheistic pharaoh.
He abandoned the traditional Egyptian gods.
He championed the worship of Aten, the sun disk god.
And along with his wife, Nefertiti, who many people have heard about, of course, they promoted this new faith or Atenism.
And it's a fascinating period of pharaonic history.
Even Freud actually was fascinated by it.
He made the hypothesis that Moses was an Atenist priest who left after the anti-Atenist revolution.
And the story follows a young man who travels the country to meet different important figures to tell him what happened.
And
For me, it's fascinating how old the story is.
It's so long ago, 14th century BC, when these events actually did take place in one way or another, and yet it's so resonant.
