I wondered if he was sniffing me out, but he said later he was building a rapport with me.

Occasionally, we'd discuss what a taped, on the record interview would look like.

After a few weeks of these almost daily interactions, I could tell that he was warming up to the idea.

He had kept his story secret for so long and it clearly weighed on him.

Yes, the man was scared of going public, but more scared about what the silence would do to him if he didn't.

He had lots of questions about the process, like who writes the interview questions?

And would he play a role in writing the script for the episode?

The answer no, but I would fact check it with him when the script was finished.

I sent long, detailed responses walking him through each step, and I scheduled a call to talk things through further.

During our conversation, he surprised me by saying he'd do the interview, but only if he could remain anonymous.

This was not a small request.

In journalism, it's best practice not to use anonymous sources.

Revealing people's names holds them and us accountable to the truth.

However, it's long been the norm to allow survivors of sexual abuse to protect their identities, largely because of the stigma I mentioned before.

KUOW's ethics policy says that, quote, the grant of anonymity should be the last resort.

It also says that we have an obligation to establish that our source is credible and reliable before we make this decision.

Here's how I did that with the texter.

For starters, he consistently documented these incidents soon after they occurred, many years ago, and has kept those records.

He shared several of those with me.
