And what I think is the real link between these two and the through line for this episode, and that's Alabama's had two all-time great college football coaches who not only got to leave the game on their own terms, they got to leave Alabama on their own terms after lengthy tenures there.

You know, the nature of being a college football coach can be perilous no matter what your accomplishments.

Think about it.

You're held responsible for the decision making of adolescence.

You're the figurehead of a university.

Not even winning more games than anyone at your level can grant you immunity if things go bad, which was ultimately the fate for Joe Paterno, whose forty six years at Penn State came to an inglorious end when he's caught up in the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

You know, when you think of Woody Hayes, is your first thought the two hundred five games that he won at Ohio State, or the punch he threw at a Clemson player in the gator bowl that led to his firing the next day?

Right.

Well, when Bryant retired in nineteen eighty-two, after twenty-five years Alabama, even though he's coming off his worst record in a dozen seasons, his retirement is still about his declining health.

There wasn't this great move to oust him, right?

In fact, he died just a month after leaving the job.

So it was really his his last stage.
