The trip included a twenty eight hundred mile train ride with a four hour stop at the Grand Canyon.

That's a long way to go to presumably get your butts kicked.

But then Alabama beat Washington in twenty nineteen, a win that Wade called the greatest soul of his career.

Damon Runyon, the legendary sports writer, covered the game and called Alabama probably the greatest team that ever came out of the South.

The whole South rejoiced in the victory when the train pulled into New Orleans on the way back to Alabama.

There was a huge celebration.

Uh, and you still hear echoes of it to this day in the school fight song.

Yeah, Alabama contains the line like, Remember the Rose Bowl.

Also, your Dixie's football pride.

So the formative years of Alabama football were more like the chaotic eighties and nineties than the stability of Bryant in the sixties and seventies, though, or Bryant or Sabin in the two thousands, Chuck.

So Chuck, I gotta admit the the Bryant part of Alabama's Bryant Denny Stadium is obvious, but uh until the research I never knew where the Denny part came from.

Turns out as for Dr.

George Hutcheson, aka Mike Denny, who became the university president in nineteen twelve.

And he personally recruited the hires who built the program.

It was Zen Scott and then Wallace Wade.

And I love that.

When he hired Scott, Denny was hiring a former Cleveland horse racing rider who had almost no coaching pedigree and he took a chance on him.

Uh, you know, let's talk about the value of sports riders, because not only, you know, you mentioned Granler Rice, of course, who's four horsemen of the apocalypse lead, like really boosted Notre Dame, and you could argue the status of college football in America.

Um, so not only did an Ernestwell sports rider coach Alabama to its breakout win, sports riders are responsible for Alabama.
