The Crimson Tide nickname originated from the muddy, contentious 1907 tie with Auburn.

Birmingham Age Herald sports writer Hugh Roberts wrote that the quote Alabama players rolled over their opponents like a crimson tide.

That same game's disputes were so bitter that Alabama and Auburn didn't play each other again for roughly 40 years.

Of course, decades later, Crimson Tide made an appearance in one of my favorite Steely Dan songs, Deacon Blues, uh, which is about a loser who dreams of making it big as a saxophone player.

In this interview from uh Steely Dam founders Donald Fagan and Walter Ba Walter Becker in the Wall Street Journal in twenty fifteen, they talk about it.

Fagan said, I had an idea for a chorus.

If a college football team like the University of Aba Alabama could have a grandiose nickname like the Crimson Tide, then the nerds and the losers should be entitled to a grandiose name as well.

Becker said, Crimson Tide didn't mean anything to us except the exaggerated grandiosity that's bestowed on winners.

Deacon Blues was the equivalent for a loser in our song.

And just that that song does flow so well.

Sorry, coach, Wildcats was already taken.

A Chicago Tribune sports writer, another sports writer, used it to describe Northwestern football players in nineteen twenty-four, beat them to the punch.

He oversaw the smoothest coaching transition in Alabama's history.

Before the nineteen thirty season he announced he'd be leaving after the season to go coach at Duke.
