Um, you know, my first visit to Birmingham was in 1996.

I was covering the NCAA basketball tournament regional, and I got inundated with on on both fronts, right?

I check into my hotel, I turned on the TV and on the local news there's this countdown timer in the corner.

I'm like, what's it ticking down?

You know, hours, minutes, seconds, teachers sitting down.

Then they get to the sports.

Segment of the broadcast and sportscaster says, Well you can tell we're all it's almost time for the start of Alabama spring football.

Like this is that big of a deal that they had a countdown timer on the local news.

I love that.

So and then you know I go out for a walk and I come across a square that I immediately recognize as that that backdrop for the footage of those attack dogs being sicked on on black marchers and the the fire hoses.

Being said on peaceful protesters.

I went to the civil rights museum they have there, and uh it's powerful.

It contains the bars from the jail cell where MLK wrote his letter.

At the end of the tour, you're looking out the window at this 16th Street Baptist Church that was bombed in 1963, killing four little black girls that were inside there.

And you know, I I wasn't necessarily thinking about Alabama football at that moment, but you know, when you when you

broaden your scope and realize that Bryant was coaching in the middle of all of that.

You know, on the one hand, there's a governor who's pledged segregation forever in a speech and he's literally stood in a doorway to block black students from attending a white school.

And maybe you can see why the football coach of the flagship state school wasn't leading the way in integration.
