So Donald Trump has been elected to the office of the president twice now.
So the 22nd Amendment, by its plain and clear terms, prohibits him from being elected
a third time.
Many people that are not steeped in the Constitution in the way that I am have spoken in terms of the 22nd Amendment prohibiting terms of office as president, but it does not.
It prohibits any person from being elected.
So Donald Trump simply cannot be elected constitutionally in the United States of America.
But he doesn't pretend to be bound by the Constitution in this context or in any other.
That's why he is out talking to the American people about his interest in, and let's just say his interest
intent, if you listen to Steve Bannon's words, of being president again in the United States in 2029.
Now, Don, what your audience needs to understand is that in the lead up to January 6, 2021, that is in September, October, November,
of that year, then President Donald Trump was saying that he would never leave the White House.
No one believed him then.
I didn't believe him then.
I've said publicly many times that it was not until the week or two before January 6th that my wife of 40 years convinced me
that indeed he would not leave the presidency.
And of course he did not, but before trying to block the joint session from counting the votes of the electoral college for Joe Biden and inciting and if not leading
certainly inspiring a riot on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.
So the implicit message, if you will, of my piece in The Atlantic today is that we did not believe him when he said he was going to remain in office in 2020 and 2021.
We must
believe him today when he says he would love to remain in office in 2029 for a third term.
