No one was going to stand in your way.

And I think what Abramovich realized was that English football was and basically like a I mean, this was true of the UK economy and UK society as well.

Well, at this point, which was that if you showed up with an awful lot of money, somebody would just roll out the red carpet and say, Well, step right this way, sir, without asking many questions.

And Abramovich's great insight I think was his ability to take advantage of that more earlier and more

I think it's worth repeating, particularly for our young our younger listeners and viewers.

Nobody had ever done this before.

It was compl and now it's quite common, right?

That a team will get investment or a team will just change their strategy and they will go and buy seven, eight, nine players, all established players, uh, who will come straight into the first team and it will ch things can change quite quickly.

That this never used to happen.

I rem back in the two summer two thousand three when this is when this occurred, it was a completely

New departure for English football.

And it gave them a huge edge over everyone else because of their ability, particularly if you look at the types of players they went for in that first summer.

They went for a really interesting mix of like some really established names like Verona Makalele, some really good Premier League players or players who've just been relegated at West Ham, uh, like Johnson and Joe Cole, and then also players who were kind of coming.

I think the the really good buys are the players who are at kind of younger.

players who are improving at kind of big but not huge teams in Europe.

So Czech from Wren, Robin from PSV, those kind of signings, even Dropper from Marseille, like coming straight into the Premier League.

Those are the kind of players who traditionally would not always come to the Premier League.

They might in the past have gone to uh Spain or Italy instead, but signing that those players who then became superstars at Chelsea, that was the real edge, I think.

Uh, I think there was a bit of certainly a bit of surprise.

Uh maybe a little bit of jealousy.
