They still exist, though, and in some cases, they're thriving.
They still provide what they can provide.
I've been a lover of bookstores all my life, from the bookstores in the malls of Madison, Wisconsin, where I got to buy one book each time we went school shopping, and my dad finally made a rule that I couldn't read the book in the car, so I wouldn't have finished it before we even brought the book across the threshold of our home.
Little did he know, it didn't really matter, because I would simply read and reread those great brain books hundreds, maybe thousands of times.
It's not like I was walking in the house and chucking the book in the trash.
But that feeling of being there at that mall, yes, we're going to get some school clothes and maybe some nuts at the Buddy Squirrel's nut shop.
But what I really wanted was that book, the experience of going in the store, walking past the shelves, picking out the book, holding it in my hand, knowing that it had a whole package of adventures inside just for me.
It's why we launched our press, the HOL Press.
It's the feeling you can recapture of loving books for the experience they deliver.
maybe it's the paperback you crammed in a pocket or purse and took with you on a bus ride or that big book you hauled with you to the beach the dickens you read under the covers with a flashlight hat tipped to my beloved wife emma when she was ten years old
And it's the feeling of being in the library or at your school or at your local neighborhood library or maybe a city or a town you're visiting and the feeling of making your way to the bookstore and walking through that front door and seeing what that store is all about.
I have a local bookstore.

Today we're going to bring you the two women behind my local bookstore, Wonderland Books of Bethesda, Maryland.
They're not a bookstore that struggled through the battles that I mentioned earlier.
They opened in December of 2024 and already they're thriving.
