I have no idea if they're thriving financially.

I hope they are.

They seem to be.

But in atmosphere, that's where I can tell they're thriving and being part of a community.

in giving you that feeling when you walk in the door that this is a place that's run by good people, that's full of good people who care about all the right things.

And in that, Wonderland Books is as rich and mature as any business with decades of success under its belt.

Amy and Gail, welcome to the History of Literature.

So, I am starting a series on independent bookstores around the world that have been recommended by podcast listeners, and I wanted to kick things off with Wonderland Books for a couple of reasons.

First, it's my local independent bookstore, and I love visiting your store.

Every time I walk through the doors, I feel a little better about life.

Yeah.

And second, a lot of the nominees that we've gotten are older independent bookstores, maybe 75 years old, 100 years old.

And I think the story that we're going to hear from those bookstores will be one of survival.

And but you guys opened and I think if I have this right, December of twenty twenty four.

So my first question is, was this a dream you had and you said, hey, we're going to open a bookstore even if it's a doomed endeavor because this is just something we have to try?

Or did you look around in 2024 and say, there's a real need here and we think we can fulfill it?

What made you think an independent physical bookstore could be viable in 2024?

Right.
